You and I are citizens of Rome, and Rome is the melding of ancient Greece and the Judeo-Christian ethic. The Spartans were so fierce in that battle that Xerxes vowed never again to fight Greeks on land. Had the Spartans not fought like they did, Greece would have become a Persian state, and Rome would not have flowered. The Mediterranean would have become a Persian lake. Think of Western Europe and North America as being descendants of Persia and not of Rome. I think we’re glad that Sparta saved us. I did not see the movie. That battle is the most important event in Western history.
